As you’ll expect, we build the whole piece with basic hand tools.

The focus with this project is learning how to build by hand efficiently.

If you’re just starting out with hand tools, this series will open your eyes to just how effective and productive they can be.

If you’re an experienced builder then we’re confident you’ll pick up some new tips to help speed up your workflow.

This is a 12 part series totalling over 6 1/2 hours of tuition.

And it’s all available to watch right away.

What You’ll Need –

If you’d like an idea of the timber requirements then you can download the cutting list above.

We’re using pine for the base and cherry for the top.
Of course any species will work here.

The Tool Kit –

I keep my kit minimal because that’s the way I like to work.

If you can master even a few tools then you’ll become a confident worker very quickly.

In this build we use:

– Hardpoint / panel saw
– Jack Plane (I use a No 5 but a shorter bench plane would also be ok)
– Measuring & marking tools: tape measure, ruler, pencil, marking gauge, bevel, square, marking knife
Carcase saw (for dovetailing)
Chisels
Dovetail chisels
– Mallet
– Fretsaw

In Chapter One we also use a bandsaw for our rough material prep.
This is entirely optional and an alternative hand tool only approach is also demonstrated.

– Through & half blind dovetails
– Drawer fitting

For an overview of the project, have a watch of the intro at the top of this post.
(p.s sorry about those shorts… yep, he made them himself.)

    Richard,

This looks like a great follow project to the others. It appears that you’re making the carcass out of pine? Is that your primary choice of wood (seeing it used in the spoon rack and side table) or do you choose that for beginner projects for its ease of workability?

    Thanks! I love your videos!

Just wondering if there is a support group out there for people buying these videos on the basis that they are clearly addictive apart form being brilliant. I’ve got three and I haven’t made anything yet but, my God, my tools are sharp – after the sharpening one. The table looks a treat and once the workshop is fully up and running will be in production, and I’m just a beginner. Anyway it’s nice to get the Christmas viewing organised early so thanks to Richard and Helen.
