The English Woodworker Videos – Online

by | Jan 15, 2013 | 11 comments

We announced last week that we’re working on some new online woodworking videos and we want to give you a taste of what they’re all about.

Bench building keeps us busy, no doubt there. But we’ve always felt that if you’re going to do something it’s worth doing right. Building workbenches gives me a huge satisfaction as they’re built for others like myself; people who are enthusiastic and understanding of woodworking and I like to think that a good workbench will help them enjoy it even better.

Being able to encourage woodworking is important to me but there’s a limit to how many benches I can make and this is where our online videos come in. They’re about bringing our enthusiasm for woodwork to a larger audience.

What you can expect from The English Woodworker Videos:

Entertainment versus Education – We want to inspire you to go out and get stuck in to your own projects so ultimately the videos are designed to be enjoyed and show a build from start to finish at a steady pace. Like anything of this nature you can expect to learn about woodworking and pick up techniques and terminology throughout but education isn’t the key focus – we haven’t created a curriculum.

Hand Tool Woodworking – Our passion is for hand tools and traditional woodworking but this isn’t always about just preserving the past. Hand tools are relevant right now especially if your tight on space, enjoy a quiet work environment, and appreciate that pleasure of controlling your work with your own finger tips. You’ll see just how quick and fluent hand work can be and how a huge variety of work can be achieved with a surprisingly small range of tools. Don’t be surprised though when we fire up some machinery, we see a big difference between this and power tools. Machines have a place in our workshop and can be very practical at the roughing stages.

Ability – The videos are intended to offer something for all levels of woodworking ability. They won’t be presented in a beginner to expert order but will include builds that vary in difficulty.

No Preaching – We don’t want to dictate how you should and shouldn’t carry out your woodworking. We’ll show you what works efficiently for us and touch on some of the alternate methods but we can’t tell that oil stones trump water when it comes to sharpening for example nor would we want to.

This is one of a series of posts to give you a feel for our videos and there’s a lot more to be covered on their structure soon. There’s also an introductory video to come and this will have one very important lesson – understanding the thick Lincolnshire accent.

The main plan is to have the content available to stream and download straight from the website and we may also look in to hard copies of DVD’s.Thanks for the support.
