So here we have part one of our Wall Cupboard build. As we’ve mentioned on the run up this is a nice simple project with small material costs so the absolute beginner will be able to give it a go, and it’s certainly great fun for the experienced too. We’ll have a follow up video next time with alternate ways to cut the rebates if you don’t have snazzy planes.

This cupboard build video takes you through some of the thought processes of building simple furniture by hand. We’ve started out at the basics and chose a project that’s functional yet also something you can easily make with minimal tools and space. If you’d like to make this cupboard then remember to download the free plan below. And if you’re keen to learn more about how to build with hand tools then also take a look at our Premium Videos which include many hours of detailed instruction.

Thanks Paul. There are so many ways to enjoy woodwork but we wanted to start out with a project that hopefully shows that you don’t need an excess of time, space or equipment to enjoy building something functional.

A really well balanced video, with a good pace, and excellent graphics. Your workshop/studio does look a bit clean though, not like mine!
    Keep them coming!

Thanks Chris. Must say there is a little extra cleaning required round here to get ready for the cameras!

    Richard and Helen,
Very nice video. Nice work. Loved the chalkboard too.

In a couple of my last little projects, after I had completed some joinery, I decided to smooth a surface with the plane. In both cases, doing so after the mortice and tenon had been cut messed up my joinery fit. Your advice Richard about doing any smoothing with a plane before you do any joinery is one of those work habits that I need to follow. One would think that it would be the most logical thing to do the smoothing first but leave it to me to step out of the logical sequence. Anyway, I will from now on hear and heed your words when it comes to smoothing where joinery is to take place. Thank you.

I have watched the two videos several times now and have learned a lot from both of them. Thank you both.

    Hi Richard & Helen,
Many Congratulations for an excellent video on this new Project.
BTW, I’ve finally got back on to building my Tool Chest! Its only been 18 months!
See you at the European Show.
    Cheers, Stephen.

P.S. I suspect Helen put in lots more work editing this that it took you to make the Cupboard! 🙂

Thanks Stephen, yeah Helen certainly drew the short straw, I wouldn’t like to say how many hours she’s been sat editing! One good thing about your tool chest is the wood’s going to be very well seasoned, it’s amazing isn’t it how life gets a hold of you! I’ve been thinking about doing a tool chest build soon so we’ll see who finishes first..
      All the best, Richard.
