Chair Building Basics – New Video Series!

by | Mar 29, 2018 | 11 comments

In our latest series we learn how to build a chair.

Chapter One is already live.
This series can be purchased by Clicking Here.

Chair building can require specialist tools and joints that are less familiar to the general furniture maker, so we’re starting out here with a chair that’s in our comfort zone.

This is the first Series in what will become our ‘Chair Building Evolution’.
It’s an introduction to chair making, so we’re building with basic hand tools and methods.

It’s an approachable build, but we’re still going to make sure that it’s a nice piece to have in your home.
We want you to build a chair to be proud of.
But the thing is, we can’t show you what it looks like, because we haven’t designed it yet.

This whole series is a little different to usual, so please watch the video above for a better idea.

What we mean by ‘Live Builds’.

This isn’t live streaming or anything fancy like that.

In fact you’ll experience the videos in very much the same way as usual.

But unlike each Premium Series, which is filmed well in advance and spends months on the hard drive being edited and produced, you’ll be watching the ‘Live Builds’ within a day or so.
We want you to get involved. This will be a Series that will be more insightful and more responsive than usual.
To make this possible you should expect a faster edit and looser feel.

What to Expect.

With this first build, we don’t just want you to watch and learn how to build a chair.

We’ve deliberately left the design open, so the start of this series will be teaching the process of designing itself.
You’ll learn my odd yet organic steps for designing a piece of furniture that you can apply to any piece that you might be planning to build.
We’ll go through the prototyping together, and take on board any suggestions that you’d like to put forward.

We’ll discuss the joinery choices, learn how to overcome any challenges the design poses, and once satisfied, get on with the build.
Between us we’ll be creating a new design classic. A beautiful chair that’s simple and practical to build with our basic tool kit. You’ll be knocking them out so quickly you’ll have to get them up for sale.
Or failing that we’ll at least come up with something half decent that you’ll be proud to park your arse on.

Live Run Discount –

The final price of the series will be decided once all of the videos are complete, but we know it will be a minimum of £35.00.

As we run live, we’ll be discounting this to £26.00.

You’ll be joining us without seeing the chair itself and we appreciate that, but you will get to be involved in the decisions and have all of your questions answered.

Frequency –

We’re aiming to keep the videos coming out at a minimum of one a week, and there’s a good chance it will be more frequent than this.
As we progress through the series, we’ll update you with more specifics, and that information will be found here.

Getting Started –

The design of the chair is already forming in my head, so we’re getting this Series running without any pre-launch.

Chapter One is already up ready to watch, and Chapter Two will follow in a matter of days.

You can purchase this series here: Buy Now
or Login First if you’re already a member.

This is not a replacement to our usual Premium Series, but a response to what people have been asking for. We feel it makes a great way to provide extra insight and will compliment our other style of videos.

P.S Here’s the link to that original post ‘The Three Stooges’.

Wonderful Richard! I was intrigued by the original “commode chair” blog and have been hoping you’d followed it up. Thanks, and thanks to Helen for the outstanding productions.

Always a pleasure to see new content ( ugh, that word is so cold) from the pair of you. Chapter One will be nice to watch with some beans on toast!

More live… more insightful…? Prepare for the senses overload! 😉 I understand the change but I’d also like to let you know that altought the production and editing were clearly very involved I have never felt the insightfulness was sacrificed for “more polished end result”. And “insightful”… Man, if there’s one word that could describe your teaching that would be it. In fact I’ve used a similar expression when I tried convincing my younger brother to get into your courses.

I don’t know but I think you look fabulous in that t-shirt no need to put on even a single coat if you ask me! 😉

also that new series sounds great, getting a bit sick of all those “stick chairs” I see everywhere (no I mean they are great but it’s nice to see something different). I’ve wanted to build a chair very similar to the “Moravian Back Stool” which is called “Brettstuhl” (boarded chair) here in Germany.
It’s really cool, because under the seat are two sliding dovetail battens and the legs are foxwedged into these battens (although sometimes they also go trough the seat (which doesn’t seem the best solution to me when it comes to allowing wood movement) and the back is usually just one board with two “tenons” that go trough the seat and trough the battens and are locket with two wedges.

one last question though before I purchase, are you going to be wearing coats or just the t-shirt?
