Meeting Rosie

Side escapement plane
I’d seen a picture of this plane a while back and I was looking forward to seeing if she’d be taken along to the European Woodworking Show last weekend – I was in luck!

The old and unassuming little plane has been named Rosie (there’s a story behind that) and it’s one of the latest wooden planes to be added to Richard Arnold’s collection.

Straight away I was intrigued by the design. It seemed to open up a fantastic avenue for User Made Planes of the side escapement, or moulding plane type. Building these would normally be a sod of a job.

Since seeing it I’ve had a few extra thoughts on simplifying it further. It’s yet another job added to the to do list, but sooner or later I will get around to knocking one up, it’s been fired to the front of the short list (don’t worry, that’s after the Jack plane build).

Once it’s built, I’ll let you know how it goes.
