Build A Retro Sideboard
The Full Details
This is Our Latest Series is now complete.
Chapter One: Carcase Prep
29 mins.
We’re making a start on our pine carcase.
Before we begin we take a look in to the construction of the sideboard and get an understanding of how it all comes together. The build is then started by prepping up the pine panels that will become our main carcase.

Chapter Two: Feet & Inside The Carcase
27 mins.
There’s a few jobs to do to the carcase boards before we join them together.
Housings to accept the back, holes to accept the shelf, and mortices for the feet. We’re getting all of these jobs done now, and we’re also making the feet so the joints on them can be cut and fitted to the base while it’s on its own.

Chapter Three: Dovetailing The Carcase
33 mins.
It’s time to join the carcase together
We go through the full process of dovetailing from marking out to cutting and fitting. For the most part these are through joints, although we do a slight half blind for covering over the housing for the back – this is all detailed step-by-step.

Chapter Four: Gluing & Cleaning Up The Carcase
17 mins
The Carcase Needs To Be Square & Twist Free.
There’s nowhere to hide when you’re hanging double doors; particularly when you don’t have a face frame. From the very start of bringing this carcase together we need to take care to get things bang on. That means gluing up as square as possible, & once set, working around the face of the piece to ensure it’s completely twist free.

Chapter Five: Making The Back
39 mins
The back is a really big feature of this sideboard.
With book-matched oak panels set inside a frame, there’s a lot of work to this back. Because the doors are glazed this has been designed to draw the eye in. We’re working with thin pieces here, creating accurate lap joints, and setting panels it to the framework.

Chapter Six: Making The Doors
39 mins.
The door frames are built with bridle joints.
These glazed doors have simple and clean lines. To create strength and accuracy in the frames, we’re building them with bridle joints which are cut with a simple guide system.

Chapter Seven: Hanging The Doors
37 mins.
These doors need to be hung with precision and care.
If we get anything off when hanging these doors then unequal gaps around those simple lines are going to really scream out at us. We take our time, systematically fitting and hanging these doors accurately in to the carcase.

Chapter Eight: Finishing Up
27 mins.
We’ve got a job list to check through as we get this piece finished up.
Everything needs a good tart up, and we’ve also got a shelf to make, handles to fit and the legs to get trimmed back. Once that’s all finished, we’re completing the sideboard with paint for the pine, and oil on the oak. This is the stage where you can really have some fun and add your own twist to the piece with your own choice of finish.
