Now then. I don’t think we all learn the same way.

I need to know the why’s and the how’s. Just giving me the answer does nowt.
School was like that, and I did shite.

I’ve noticed with craft that a lot of it has been forgotten. And now, through passion and interest, old methods are being brought back. Often with modern learning techniques and plenty of scientific maths.
Considering your average craftsman back in the day could hardly string the letters together to spell his own name, you’ve got to wonder how they figured things out.

What to Expect from this Series:

This course isn’t just a plan and a how to.

It’s easy enough to build a half decent chair if you just follow a plan and do as you’re told.

But I want this to be more about how it’s figured, and getting into that mindset. From a scratty sketch to a full size plan, then how to turn that into a three dimensional chair. You can follow along and you’ll end up with a nice chair. But I feel after this you’ll be itching to design your own, with a much clearer understanding of how.

No Scientific Maths.

I was taught by old men, from chairs to timber frames built entirely of oak. Never did they rely on maths.
In this game it’ll always let you down… or so they said.

String is the answer.
We’ll go through figuring all the leg angles, finding the sight lines, and how to set up for small batch work. It’s easy to fall into batch work when you’re building chairs.

What You’ll Need

As usual the tool list is short.

Basic bench tools (more info on those very soon) and a reamer or two.

You’ll see as we design this chair how to work around different reamer angles, so you can make it with most of what’s out there.

The Design

The design is a bit of a concoction, brutalist mixed with Tage Frid’s well-known three legged stool, with the focus kept firmly on chair making technique. And it doesn’t need much wood.

(Plan and cutting list coming soon.)

If you follow along and build this stool, the design is yours to use freely. I’d guess they’d sell nicely, and make a good proficient build done in small batches.

Timings

The series will start running live from the 4th September.

Each chapter will be shared with you as a video which you can watch online or download to watch any time.
Once you sign up you’ll have access to the members area to watch these, and a quick email notification will come through to let you know when each chapter goes live. It’s nice and simple!

The drawings to show all of the measurements and details will be added alongside the videos as we go along.

It’s all available for a low one time payment of £26

This includes a 25% for purchasing while the content is still running.
Once it’s all live the price will increase to £35.00

Brilliant! I can’t wait. Last week I rewatched and built the bench tray, and it was a lot of fun. Good to get new courses.
